前秦建元十二年(公元376年)，前秦皇帝苻坚以长安门户高平(现在的平凉)为后方，厉兵秣马，以凉主张天锡“虽称藩受位，然臣道未纯”为由派兵十三万进攻前凉，兵临河西，赤岸(临夏黄河边)一战歼灭凉军三万八千余人。八月兵临前凉都城姑臧(今甘肃武威)，张天锡被逼出降，前凉至此灭亡。始以平凉之名置郡，取“平定凉国”之意，平凉之名始见史册。

Pingliang is a prefecture-level city in Gansu Province. Located in the eastern part of Gansu Province, at the eastern foot of Liupan Mountain and the upper reaches of the Jing River, it is the "Golden Triangle" of the geometric center where Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia meet. Tianshui, Gansu, adjacent to Guyuan in Ningxia and Qingyang in Gansu to the north, is an important node city in the urban agglomeration of the Guanzhong Plain.

In the twelfth year of Jianyuan of the former Qin Dynasty (376 A.D.), Fu Jian, the former emperor of the Qin Dynasty, took Gaoping (now Pingliang), the gate of Chang'an, as his rear, and made great efforts to mobilize his troops. Liang advocated that Tianxi "although he is called a vassal to accept the throne, but his ministers are not pure". 130,000 troops were sent to attack Qianliang, and the soldiers came to Hexi, and more than 38,000 Liang troops were wiped out in the First Battle of Chi'an (by the Yellow River in Linxia). In August, soldiers came to Guzang, the capital of Qianliang (now Wuwei, Gansu), Zhang Tianxi was forced to surrender, and Qianliang was destroyed. At the beginning, the county was established under the name of Pingliang, taking the meaning of "pacifying Liangguo", and the name of Pingliang began to appear in the annals of history.

Pingliang is an important animal husbandry base and fur distribution center in Northwest China, and a major agricultural and forestry product production base and animal husbandry in Gansu Province.
